The client requested studioPLPV to assemble a series of spaces typical of most single-family homes and include an accessory dwelling unit for extended family. Their most important request included large open spaces and exposed construction similar to what they experienced while living in urban lofts. Our response centered around establishing two rectilinear volumes arranged to take advantage of the developing views associated with the long narrow lot and simple construction utilizing a common pre-engineered steel building. The volume of the main house separates the public and private areas of the home by carving out a courtyard and covered walkway that leads to the main entrance to the residence. The accessory dwelling unit is in close proximity to the residence to help establish a visual boundary for the informal open space between the volumes. The exposed construction becomes evident while transitioning from the parking court to the main entrance of the home and continues throughout the interior. The main living area contains oversize commercial windows to take advantage of the southern light and connect the interior of the home to the exterior.

A pre-engineered steel building, really? Well yes, and we love it!
